Health Affairs recently published a study showing that the Veterans Administration’s (VA’s) investment in electronic health records and other health information technology yielded a whopping $3.09 billion in cumulative benefits and improved preventive care. Savings reportedly stemmed from reduced workloads, avoidance of unnecessary tests and hospitalizations, and freed workspace. DSS and Sage Health Management Solutions to Demonstrate RadWise®, an EHR Integrated Medical Imaging Decision Support Application, at HIMSSRadWise, a vxVistA Certified Product, Helps Physicians Order the Most Appropriate Imaging Procedures Based on Patient Needs for Increased Patient Safety and Reduced ExpensesJUNO BEACH, Fla. (Business Wire)- Feb 25, 2010 DSS, Inc., a provider of software, integration, installation, project management, training, support and development of VistA, today announced that it will demonstrate RadWise®, an electronic health record (EHR) integrated computerized physician order entry tool, at the HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition in Atlanta March 1–3. Developed by Sage Health Management Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of DSS, the application helps providers select, document and order the most appropriate radiology procedure at the point of care. In addition to being integrated with commercial and private-sector EHR systems, RadWise can be used as a standalone, Web-based tool. The application is vxCertified, signifying approval by the vxVistA Governance Committee for use of the technology in combination with vxVistA, DSS’s open source EHR system. “Radiology expenses account for approximately 10 percent of the total healthcare dollar and the expense is growing rapidly each year. Further complicating this problem is that an estimated 30 to 40 percent of healthcare costs are attributed to inappropriate orders,” said Mark Byers, president and CEO of DSS, Inc. “RadWise helps physicians select the most appropriate imaging procedures based on documented medical evidence, leading to reduced medical expenses and improved quality of care.” The system utilizes bi-directional communications to help reduce errors, increase efficiency and facilitate greater provider accountability. When integrated with EHRs, RadWise can reduce the need for referrals and pre-certifications since medical necessity is already documented, improve utilization management and associated tracking, and ensure patient records are up to date with radiology orders for enterprise wide sharing of clinical information. The HIPAA-compliant application is continually updated as new findings, protocols and best practices are approved based on the latest medical literature.

I would like to add several new items as vxVistA proposed projects and as vxVistA projects. How do I add them into these specific sections? As the community begins to download and install our DSS OS version; it is important that the community: READ the manuals: become familiar with the application and understand its requirements. If you test without knowledge of the requirements, you will not be able to determine if a program is functioning as designed and you will not be able to tell if required functionality is missing. TEST the system: Test the roles of users and validate that the rules governing their role are working. …

Much is written today disparaging M, whenever it comes up in conversations, discussions, blogs, articles or pretty much anywhere. This sort of issue has been going on for years in many forms. For instance: cars are bad. They pollute the atmosphere. They create dangers on the road. They can easily be misused. Let's switch to bikes. They are still a wheeled vehicle. … Our open choice quality assurance is driven by customer requests and findings. We will be collaborating with the community to identify any possible problems to the quality of our release. We will identify problems such as a lack of documentation, reliance on individuals, problems in collaboration, and problems in release management. Insights of these problems serve as a starting point for further improvements in quality assurance. …

The concept of our vxVistA open source stack is to keep it as compatible as possible to the VA's continued Patch and Enhancement Release stream. In fact we will install all FOIA Patches to the vxVistA open source stack just to make sure we don’t deviate too far from the source. This way all the good work done by the VA can float down to the community in a fairly expeditious manner without a great deal of re-development and quality assurance time being devoted to maintaining the system. …

...then read this article and join the fray with your opinions. There are many naysayers out there. We must be cheerleaders for our team! Link to M article: http://www.vxvista.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=24543489 Using vxRadWise means that all patients regardless of the provider who is ordering imaging will follow a standard process and each patient will be compared to the evidence to determine the proper recommended imaging procedure. The type of standardization, while allowing the providers to make the final decision, allows a healthcare organization to review the individual outcomes for patients for quality improvement and provider education. vxRadWise is tackling the single biggest area of medical errors: diagnosis. According to the Quality Review Bulletin, Preventing Medical Injury, ". . . of preventable medical errors, 17% were diagnostic and 10% were drug errors." This fact is surprising to many as medication errors have been in the media spotlight. …
