Taken from November 2009 issue of Government Computer News:

Getting Started in OS

As the community begins to download and install our DSS OS version; it is important that the community:

READ the manuals: become familiar with the application and understand its requirements. If you test without knowledge of the requirements, you will not be able to determine if a program is functioning as designed and you will not be able to tell if required functionality is missing.

TEST the system: Test the roles of users and validate that the rules governing their role are working. …

To M or not to M...

Much is written today disparaging M, whenever it comes up in conversations, discussions, blogs, articles or pretty much anywhere.  This sort of issue has been going on for years in many forms.  For instance: cars are bad.  They pollute the atmosphere.  They create dangers on the road.  They can easily be misused.  Let's switch to bikes.  They are still a wheeled vehicle. …

The concept of our vxVistA open source stack is to keep it as compatible as possible to the VA's continued Patch and Enhancement Release stream.  In fact we will install all FOIA Patches to the vxVistA open source stack just to make sure we don’t deviate too far from the source.

This way all the good work done by the VA can float down to the community in a fairly expeditious manner without a great deal of re-development and quality assurance time being devoted to maintaining the system. …

Vista, M, and the future

I recently added this voice (edited herein) to the rush of responses to ZDNet’s Dana Blankenhorn’s article “VA now loves its VistA Software” dated 15 October, 2009. The rush of responses I refer to was very disparaging regarding VistA and M/MUMPS as well. - jdk

M is the latest name for the MUMPS language - which was revised as recently as 2005 by ISO. …
