 Michael L. Henderson, FHL7, has over 30 years' experience in the financial, healthcare, and educational areas of the IT industry. A 1984 graduate of Wheeling Jesuit University, he is the author of HL7 Messaging, available through http://www.otechimg.com, and has been a frequent speaker and tutorial instructor at healthcare IT industry conferences. He currently serves as Director of Open Source Product Management for OSEHRA, the Open Source Electronic Health Record Alliance, based in Arlington, Virginia.
Mike has developed clinical and interface solutions in the public and private sectors for vendors and providers including Antrim Corporation and Kaiser Permanente. From 2002 through 2013 he consulted to the VistA Imaging Program of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In this capacity he developed repository processing solutions to enable conversion of legacy free-text metadata to enterprise-wide controlled vocabularies. He also built IHE-conformant interfaces from the VistA health information system to commercial PACS and digital pathology systems, as well as publishing HL7 interoperability profiles for these interfaces (available at http://www.va.gov/imaging) and creating, maintaining and administering validation suites to enable solution providers to verify conformance to VA's requirements.
In cooperation with international entities including the Canada Health Infoway and the Australian Collaborative Centre for e-Health, Mike has worked to promote the conformance efforts of the major healthcare IT standards developing organizations. He has participated as a guest lecturer on standards and interoperability in informatics programs at the University of Ballarat in Australia and at the University of Maryland and The Johns Hopkins University in the USA. A fellow of Health Level Seven International, he is a past co-chair of the Control/Query Technical Committee and the Education Work Group of HL7 and of the IT Infrastructure Technical Committee of the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Initiative.
